If John intends for us to understand that Jesus wanted to speak with Mary privately, v. 31 shows that it was not possible. By the Jews coming with Mary, however, the scene is set for the wondrous act. Weep (klausē) means to wail and is used too of Mary Magdalene in 20:11, 15.
